dave’s story isn’t nearly as epic as george hoover’s. i drew george hoover over and over for over a year, and the dave we know didn’t exist until the second strip! what i can tell you about him is: he apparently likes trucks, owns a guinea pig, he may or may not be banging itty, and he wears his pajamas to work. he was supposed to be the straight man of the group, the only one with a real job, and despite his assholishness and need to participate in drunken tomfoolery with the others, he is the straightest in the group. though they didn’t set the bar too high.
but on to his concept! i’ve been in love with drawing kids in animal pajamas since the lost boys from peter pan. my most recent ones before dave are here:
the boy at the bottom middle is wearing a red panda suit, and he is also the first “dave” i drew.
but somehow, being a bear made more sense for him. he could work hard, and then hibernate when he got too stoned. i mean in the winter. the boy bear at the bottom middle was will’s contribution. why didn’t he just draw everything?
there all done! wait! who the hell is that??
after looking at the first lineup, i decided the old dave didn’t have any charm or appeal and the other characters were easily out shining him. he was so uptight! he needed more of a laid back personality, so i re-did him before he made his debut.
so that’s dave. used to be blonde. has a guinea pig. likes trucks. potential lost boy?
